Fly-In to Sicily 2015
Fascinating Sicily – multifaceted island
from Thursday 4th - Tuesday 9th June, 2015
In accordance with the wishes of our members, we are planning to extend our Fly-In from the Thursday to the Tuesday, on account of the long way there and back as well as the many attractions when we get there.
Italy without Sicily leaves no impression
on the soul, for there lies the key
to everything.
Goethe's Travels to Italy, 1787
Dear Members,
True to the above quotation, our Fly-In 2015 will take us to Sicily, in the region of Ragusa near Syracuse.
Our destination airport is Comiso. LICB
You will be impressed by the 5 star luxury dream Eremo della Giubiliana hotel, which has been exclusively reserved for us. Of course, its 22 rooms will not be enough to accommodate us all, which is why we have booked additional beautiful rooms in the 4 star hotel Poggio del Sole (just a 3-minute drive away).
We will be organising a shuttle service between the two hotels so that all participants will be able to enjoy the facilities at the Eremo della Giubiliana.
Among other highlights, we will be visiting Ragusa Ibla, Sicily's most beautiful baroque town and UNESCO world heritage site.
Our day trip will take us to the harbour town of Syracuse, home of the papyrus in Europe, once Sicily's mightiest town in terms of size and significance,
and the Castello di Donnafugata. The architecture and history of this building are fascinating. It was in this castle that Visconti's film “The Leopard” and the “Commissaro Montalbone” series were made.
Typical for the region is the white chalk of Monti Iblei, from which the towns were built.
One of our culinary highlights will be our Gala Dinner in the gourmet restaurant Don Serafino, which has been awarded 2 Michelin stars.
We will be in need of a little exercise after all the pleasure.
So we won't want to miss Pantalica, which is also a UNESCO world heritage site.
Pantalica (Valley of the Anopo and the Torrente Cava Grande) has 5000 graves hewn into the chalk cliffs during the 20th Century BC and is the biggest archaeological necropolis in Europe. There are unbelievably beautiful views from here of unique natural wonders and the site constitutes an extremely important archaeological aspect of south-east Sicily.
You are invited to wander around in the valley, to refresh yourself if you like in the beautiful water and to partake of an invigorating and exclusive picnic.
Dear Members, you are cordially invited to take part. The full program is attached.
Look forward to our Fly-In 2015! As in previous years it promises to be the highlight of the year.
