Fly-In 2006: Dubrovnik, the Pearl of the Adriatic
from 22nd thru 25th June 2006
Dear Members,
Following our visit last year to the North of Europe, this year’s Fly-In will take us South to Dubrovnik from
Thursday, 22nd thru Sunday, 25th June 2006.
Dubrovnik is considered to be the “Queen of the Adriatic”, a historic trading centre with medieval fortifications, built between the 13th and 16th Centuries, which are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We will be staying in the five-star Hotel Grand Villa Argentina, beside the sea and just 500 metres from the Old Town.
Our first evening meal will be on the terrace of the Hotel, overlooking the historical centre. Music will be provided by Klapa Maestral, one of Croatia’s best groups, specialising in guitar, mandolin and song.
On the Friday we will be visiting the Old Town with its 14th Century Franciscan Monastery. Here we will see the beautiful cloisters and the perfectly preserved apothecary dating back to 1317 (one of the oldest in Europe). Then we will visit the Italian Barock St. Blasius Cathedral and Gothic Rectory Palace followed by the 15th Century Dominican Monastery.
We will be taken for a walk on the old city walls. These impressive fortifications are 2 km long, 25 m high, have 16 towers and protect a treasure house of architectural and cultural masterpieces which have been preserved over the centuries.
On the way to the Konavorski Dvori Restaurant in Gruda, where we will have lunch, we will drive through the Konavle Valley, the southern-most region of Croatia with its magical blue-green landscapes.
We will stop on the way at the edge of the valley at the medieval town of Cavtat, Dubrovnik’s predecessor.
We have managed to charter, for our exclusive use, the Karaka, a reconstruction of a 16th ship, with which we will sail on the Saturday to the Elaphite Islands. Ships like this one were in their day the biggest in the world and helped make Dubrovnik commercially significant.
This year’s Gala Dinner will be by the sea at the exclusive Atlas Club Nautika Restaurant, where Pope John Paul II dined on 6th June, 2003. The atmosphere here is quite unique!
You are cordially invited to join us! The complete programme and registration form is attached.
The price will be EUR 537,-- for each Member and partner and EUR 714,-- for each non-member.
